Premier League 2019

Usama Aftab reviews three of the best games in week one of the Premier League.

The Premier League began with a bang with Liverpool trouncing newcomers Norwich by four goals to one. There were quite a lot of surprises as well with Graham Potter's Brighton and Hove Albion spanking one of the favourites for the European places, Watford FC by three goals to nil.

The Premier League brings with itself its share of uncertainties and downfalls. Round one of the PL has just offered a taste of what's in store for us. Thirty-seven more game weeks of football yet remain and a roller coaster of a ride beckons. Without further ado, let us rank the best results from this week of Premier League football:

Manchester United vs Chelsea

Matchday one's most anticipated encounter had the super sub from Norway, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and his men take on Chelsea at Old Trafford with the match serving as the managerial debut in the Chelsea dugout for the club's all-time top scorer, Frank Lampard. Although the men in blue managed more clear-cut chances in the first half, it was the home side that took the lead through a Marcus Rashford penalty against the run of play. Manchester United built upon their 1-0 lead at half-time, and by the time the full-time whistle blew, the score was 4-0 in favour of the 'red devils'. With Chelsea committing men forward in the second half, United capitalised brilliantly with Anthony Martial and Rashford (again) leaving Chelsea's defence flummoxed on the counter and adding to the tally. Daniel James rounded off the scoring in the 81st minute following yet another Pogba assist to cap off a fine evening for the men in red.

West Ham United vs Manchester City

The second contest in the Premier League saw defending champions Manchester City kick off their campaign away to West Ham United at the London Stadium. West Ham took the game to Pep Guardiola's men in an initial attacking spree. Manchester City, however, demonstrated why they are red-hot favourites to remain at the top of the Premier League Table yet again by putting West Ham to the sword with the scoreline standing at 0-5 at the end of ninety minutes. Gabriel Jesus began the scoring fest after the ball had deflected onto his foot from Issa Diop. Kevin De Bruyne was up and running for the season after assisting Raheem Sterling in City's second, after which Sterling managed to score two more goals, sandwiched between a Sergio Aguero penalty. The game also managed to create history with VAR making its first decisions in the PL after its inception into the league. A Gabriel Jesus goal was chalked out for offside with yet another decision being the retake of Aguero's penalty, which was initially saved, for infringement by Declan Rice.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa

Newly promoted Aston Villa took on Champions League runners-up Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium to mark the beginning of a new season for both sides. Dean Smith's Villa took the lead in the ninth minute through John Mcginn after the Scotland international kept his cool to slot the ball past Hugo Lloris. The 'Villians' then retreated into their shell as Spurs launched wave after wave of attacks to find the all-important equaliser. Spurs' new man Tanguy Ndombele had the honour of scoring on his home debut and levelled the scores at 1-1 in the 73rd minute. Aston Villa's return to the Premier League had the cruellest of conclusions with Harry Kane scoring twice within the space of four minutes (86',90') to take the game away from the Birmingham-based side, with all their resolute defending amounting to nothing in the end. Tottenham was given a scare, and with Manchester City up next, they must work hard to elevate their game.
