Best Supplements for Melting the Fat

Ron Fritzke provides advice on three supplements that will help reduce your fat.

You train hard, working out with a mix of weights, low-intensity cardio, and high-intensity intervals. Your diet is also in check as you eat right, nutritious food with a balance of muscle-building protein, slow-burning carbohydrates, and good dietary fats. Even though your diet and training are in good order, you still have some stubborn fat that you would like to get rid of. You have thought about supplements to help aid you in your fat-loss journey, but there are so many out there, and you are worried that the only thing you will lose with taking supplements is money. You have come to the right place because we will look at a few supplements that might get you over that fat-loss hump. The following three supplements are worth the cost of burning fat.

Fish Oil Pills

Fish oil is one of the best supplements you can take, whether bulking or cutting. As the name implies, they are oil taken from fish tissues. The oils, made up of essential fatty acids and healthy fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated), have a plethora of health benefits:

  • These good fats will lower LDL, which are your harmful cholesterol levels
  • These good fats will raise HDL, which are your good cholesterol levels
  • These fats are heart-healthy and can help reduce blood pressure and heart disease risks
  • The good fats in fish oil help protect the brain and nervous system

When shedding weight and dropping fat, fish oils will raise your daily calorie expenditure by up to a few hundred calories. This is because fish oils help regulate hormones and metabolism. Studies also show that this healthy fat will help keep "pre-fat" cells converted and stored as body fat. Two things I like about fish oil pills are that they are pretty inexpensive and can be found in any pharmacy or grocery store.

Fat Burners

Fat burners can help get that extra little bump for burning fat—the majority work by raising the body's metabolism. Many also have ingredients that work as an appetite suppressant which can be a godsend when a dieter is in a calorie deficit (burning more calories than they consume). By being less hungry, you will eat less, and this, combined with a bump up in metabolism, should jump-start any fat loss where a dieter has plateaued. Some other benefits that users of fat burners have seen are increased energy and focus. This can translate into more intensity for workouts. More workout intensity means more calories burned. There are many out there on the market. The three best-selling fat burners on the market are OxyElite Pro, Lipo-6, and Hydroxycut. When using a fat burner, follow the directions on the label. Remember, a supplement like a fat burner should aid in weight loss and not replace a proper diet and nutrition.

Whey Protein

Another staple in any good diet is whey protein. Whey protein is a milk protein source that gets filtered out in cheese-making. Do not worry; it does not taste like cheese. It comes in various flavours, from strawberry to chocolate to even flavours like orange cream and cappuccino. So, what makes whey protein a good supplement for fat loss. First, it has a high biological value, meaning it is easily digested, absorbed, and used for muscle and tissue repair and growth. So, it is effective for helping to meet a dieter's or any user's daily protein needs, which is vital during periods of fat loss. This is because consuming whey protein will help protect muscle while dieting. Remember, dieting can be catabolic for muscles, meaning that dieting will help burn fat, but it can burn some muscle. Whey protein will help minimize that.

When it comes to fat loss, whey proteins are helpful because they are typically low in calories, fats, and carbohydrates. I tend to use them as a lower-calorie meal replacement for this alone. Whey protein is also very versatile. For instance, if you have a sweet tooth, as I do, you love anything with chocolate. Well, most foods with chocolate are high in sugar, fat, and calorie and low in nutrition. Not suitable for shedding fat. You have a tasty chocolate treat, has muscle-building protein, and are low in calories in no time. Take a chocolate whey protein scoop, mix it with some instant chocolate pudding mix, and make it as the directions indicate.

There are two supplement types, isolates and concentrates, for whey proteins. Isolates have a higher biological rating (up to 150) but cost more. Concentration still has a reasonable biological value (about 100) but is less expensive than isolates if cost is essential. My favourite brand of whey protein is "Optimum's 100% Whey". Again, whey protein supplements, like any other supplement, should aid proper nutrition. Use whole foods that are high in nutrition and lower in calories the majority of the time.
